In 1972, a small Bjelke Petersen club in the Penrith area was being forced to close because of lack of support from it’s association. However, the club’s teacher, Merrilyn Fenn decided, rather than disappoint her club members, that she would try to form an association of her own. To do this she asked Margaret Butler to help and between them they brought Western Zone into being.
Merrilyn became the first Zone President. Together, Merrilyn and Margaret organised the work, Music, Competitions etc., and continued to do so until Merrilyn resigned and went to live in the country. Margaret Butler then became Western Zone President followed by Judy Greenep.
The founders and teachers of Western Zone were Merrilyn Fenn, Margaret Butler, Judi Wadsworth, Chris Lovett, Heather Lovett and Carol Davis. The Foundation clubs included Kemps Creek, Warragamba, Mulgoa, Austral, St. Marys YMCA and Llandilo.
In 1985, Anne Newton (Phillips) took over the running of the Zone. Anne had started with the Association as a teacher, opening a club at Regentville in 1978.
On the 22nd October, 2003 Anne Newton announced her retirement and advised Teachers that Lyn Aussel and June Kilo would be taking over the Zone.
In 2004 Lyn and June registered the Zone as WZ Physical Culture and Dance and the Association continues to grow and be successful with new members.
About Lyn and June Lyn Aussel came to Western Zone in 1978 after having done BJP for a number of years. In that first year she took out the Senior Champions award. Lyn began teaching the Junior age groups at Sth. Penrith Club in 1985, then took on the Intermediate age groups in 1993 and finally the whole club in 1994. Lyn combined Sth. Penrith with Glenmore Park in 1996 and formed the Riverlands Club. Lyn was one of the Advanced Seniors for many years. Lyn also provided administrative support to Anne Newton for the years that she ran the Association, and made up some of the syllabus over the years.
June Kilo started physical culture at St. Clair as a C Grade lady in 1989. June picked physi up quickly and was grabbed by York in 1991 to teach. June spent four years teaching at York and then opened her own club at Bligh Park in 1995. With having additional support duties to Anne during 2003, June handed Bligh Park over in 2004 to concentrate all her efforts on WZ
